Metaphors

In Peace Like A River Lief Enger effectively uses metaphors to help describe situations.  Also it makes it sound more like someone is talking.  In everyday speech people tend to compare things and rename them often.  Some examples of Engers metaphors are seen pages 81 and 146.  "Black and woolly, her very own buffalo robe." This sentence is describing Mrs. DeCuellars hair.  "Of course the turkey zipped around the corner like a guided missile, gurgling with wrath and triumph. " These are some prime examples of his comparisons throughout the book.

Syntax

Enger has a unique way of writing sentences in the Peace Like a River.  There are no real examples of this but if you read the book youd understand.  Reuben is the narrator of this book and he is in his teens.  If Lief Enger wrote grammatically correct it would sound like Stephen King talking.  Enger breaks up sentences and makes them shorter and less intelligent sounding one could put it.  It adds greatly to the book and gives him a stylish quality to the characters.

Paragraph Structure

While reading Peace Like A River I noticed that whenever there was something to read or the characters were reading a document Enger would indent the paragraph and it would get you in the direction that well I am reading whatever document it was.  I believed that it was very effective and added a kind of omniscient  view to the story.  Examples of this are on pages two hundred twenty and one hundred and fifty .

Diction and Imagery

These are most important when creating a story, especially a fictional one.  Enger uses a great amount of descriptive text that helps to get the full view of the characters thoughts.  His word choice is odd at sometimes just because the characters he creates are speaking them and it fits the personality of the character.  It makes it more interesting and easier to read.
